The JoliCloud and Joli OS

JoliCloud Linux

Image via Wikipedia

JoliCloud, is a special version of the Ubuntu Linux Operating System specially developed for Netbooks with some functionality taken also from Debian Linux..

A lot of thought has been put into the design of this OS, in order to adaptit for optimal use on smaller screens.

Recently the development team have decided to re-brand the Operating System Joli OS and to reserve the JoliCloud name for the Web applications that currently run only with the Chrome browser but soon should be runnable also on Firefox and Safari. The developers are also working  on an Android app for Jolicloud which should be available soon.

If you own a Netbook, you might try an Open Source Operating System.

The  Jolicloud project has the objective to build a better operating system for web workers with Netbooks

JoliCloud is a cloud based operating system. The OS doesn’t ends with the music and text editors, being a web OS it offers the popular social networking apps like facebook, twitter and much more. The default browser to browse the web is Google chrome..

The installation is typical Ubuntu-ish. If you know how to install Ubuntu, then you will have no problems in installing it as everything is exactly the same. However the installation is not always easy and some efforts are suggested to simplify it. .

The only specification that Jolicloud puts in front is, you must have internet connectivity in order to use the operating system.

Any cloud operating system requires internet connectivity to login and manage your space and applications configured in it. It also offers the users to sign in to any of the computers in which Jolicloud is installed and they can use it as their home machine. There may be a question that what I can do if I don’t have the Jolicloud OS in the system which I was using ? For that it provides a option called Jolicloud USB creator.

You can ‘subscribe’ to other Jolicloud users, which means you’ll get updates on what they’ve installed on their own netbooks. This should provide a great way to get to know the best applications when eventually the list of tools grows too big for users to easily find their way

One thing,  which may be beneficial to the new Linux users is that unlike Vanilla Linux distributions where do not get the flash plugin; MP3 and other plugins installed, Jolicloud comes with everything loaded

The Jolicloud comes with the Google Docs for the general office works and for the multimedia works GIMP is available to satisfy the user needs. The user can enjoy the music by VLC media player, last.fm and more. More than 700 applications are available on the Jolicloud to satisfy the user needs.

For more information, you can visit the JoliCloud website.

Samsung Netbook N150

The Samsung  Netbook N150 offers better performance than the Samsung N130 and has some connectivity options such as Bluetooth that are not available on the N130.  The  processor of  the  N130 has been replaced by the more modern and powerful  N450 (1.66GHz, 667MHz, 512KB) processor, an Intel new generation chip  that allows to reduce the battery energy consumption.

Another difference from previous processors is that the Intel N450 includes also a graphic chip and a memory controller that are fully integrated within the main chip. There si no need for additional chips and this allows energy savings.

The Samsung  Netbook N150 is very reliable because  SAMSUNG directly produces most of its components which undergo intensive quality assurance testing.

It has a  6 cells long duration battery that should last for almost 10 hours or at least 8.5 hours. It is a significant improvement in comparison with previous model and this should be a reason to consider purchasing this netbook if you need a long duration battery.

The panoramic  LCD  screen with 10,1” and a resolution of 1024 x 600 offers optimized images and well defined colors.  Moreover its anti-reflective surface allows its use also in open spaces. You’ll see movies and images that are clear and picture perfect, even in bright light.

The Samsung Netbook N150 allows simple and fast network connections even during journeys by using a 802.11 bgn* wireless modem with WiBRO* large bandwidth technology for high speed network access.

The Samsung Netbook N150 has also an internal microphone  and connections for external headphones that make it suitable for VoIP  telephony.

Even if  its highly portable and has a low weight,  the Samsung Netbook N150 offers three USB 2.0 ports and a 3-in-1 memory reader for data sharing.  It allows to use Ethernet, Wireless, Verizon 3G connections and offers also Bluetooth connections (that are not available on the N130). It uses Bluetooth 3.0 High Speed* delivering higher data transmission speeds (24Mbps), 8x faster than Bluetooth 2.0 (3Mbps)

The chassis with a 26,4 x 18,8 x 2,5 ~ 2,7 cm size is elegant and robust and has a weight of 1.25 Kg only.  The ergonomic keyboard has been criticized by a few users because the keys are too small. The  Samsung  Netbook N150 is currently offered only with  Windows 7 Starter, but you can also install other operating systems such as  Linux.

You can purchase the Samsung Netbook N150 from Amazon with for a very good price.
