Lenovo A1 IdeaPad

I recently noticed another low cost table computer with good features  called Lenovo A1 or Lenovo IdeaPad A1 and I re-publish below a good review by PC World

Lenovo IdeaPad Tablet A1, a $199 Bargain

With its low price, high-resolution 7-inch display, and a GPS that doesn’t need a data connection, Lenovo’s IdeaPad Tablet A1 remakes the future of tablets.

By Robert S. Anthony and Melissa J. Perenson, PCWorld    Sep 1, 2011 6:00 pm

Lenovo has provided a sneak peek at a coming announcement, and the big reveal shows that the company has been giving serious thought to how it can make an impact with a 7-inch tablet. Coming later in September: The IdeaPad Tablet A1, the first 7-inch tablet priced at $200 or less (our bet is that it will be $199.99, but technically that’s still under $200). For that price, you’ll have to sacrifice on-board storage, but not functionality—and you’ll get some innovation, too, since it’s the first tablet with a full GPS that can be used without a data connection.

One surprise: The IdeaPad Tablet A1 comes with Android 2.3 Gingerbread, as opposed to the Android 3.2 version of Honeycomb designed for tablets (and found on the $330 Acer Iconia Tab A100). Using Gingerbread now that Android 3.2 is out feels like a letdown, especially considering that the tablets that have been able to get away with using 2.2 or 2.3 on a 7-inch display have done so by making significant customizations to the stock Android apps and interface. It’s not clear to what degree, if any, Lenovo has made such changes itself. Lenovo did mention this model would have its Launch Zone widget, something we liked in the company’s first tablet, the IdeaPad Tablet K1.

The new IdeaPad Tablet A1 isn’t especially slim—it measures 0.47 inch thick, which puts it at the half-inch thickness of Acer’s A100 and the original Samsung Galaxy Tab 7-inch model. Lenovo’s A1 weighs 0.88 pound, compared with 0.92 pound for the A100, and the original Galaxy Tab’s 0.85 pound.

Lenovo busts out the color options for the IdeaPad Tablet A1, with four separate offerings: white, black, pink, or light blue. The company talked up its magnesium alloy “roll cage” case design that protects the internal components with bumpers.

The unit achieves its low price in part through its minimal on-board storage: It comes with 2GB of internal storage, though versions with higher capacity will be available. The microSD card slot allows expansion up to 32GB, and a micro-USB port makes it easy to sideload content via your PC.

Inside, the tablet has a single-core 1GHz Cortex A8 processor. That single-core CPU may be the reason why no Honeycomb is on board, and may explain how Lenovo can achieve its aggressive price.

Most notable for a tablet at this price: The touchscreen is capacitive touch, not the all-too-common resistive touch found on the current crop of so-called value tablets. And it’s a higher-than-average-resolution display, too: 1024-by-600-pixel resolution, with 170 pixels per inch (ppi). That makes the display sharper than screens found on more expensive tablets, including the Apple iPad 2, which has 132 ppi on its 9.7-inch screen.

The IdeaPad Tablet A1’s front- and rear-facing webcams have the same resolution at 3 megapixels, and its battery is rated at 7 Web-browsing hours.

Since the built-in GPS receiver can be used with or without a data connection, the included NavDroyd navigation app can be used at any time—within reason, of course. Like the other tablets from Lenovo, the IdeaPad Tablet A1 will have access to the Lenovo App Shop, where about 200 apps for 7-inch tablets will be available. Also preinstalled: Lenovo’s Social Touch app, which aggregates email and calendar appointments with your social media connections on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and more.

Tablet Apps

I read an interesting article on the Hexus blog about crashes of Tablet Apps and I have re-published it below for your convenience

Apple iOS Apps crash three times more often than Android Apps

by Alistair Lowe on 6 February 2012, 11:27

The topic of which OS crashes the most, iOS or Android, has long been debated, however, crash analytics firm, Crittercism, has now released crash figures, shedding some light on the reality of the situation.

Surprisingly, the figures show that an application is three times more likely to crash on a device running Apple’s iOS than on a device running Google’s Android, with specific note to Apple’s latest iOS 5.0.1 release, which was present on devices for 28.64 per cent of all app crashes.

Apple iOS three times more likely to crash

It’s not unreasonable to say that as a new release, the chances of a crash on iOS 5.0.1 were more likely, however, that’s still a pretty large piece of the pie and most of the larger slices are also from previous iOS releases.

Typically, this writer would take such figures with a grain of salt, however, as the owner of both brands of product, I can attest to a feeling of skewed perception of crash rates between the two operating systems. When an app crashes on Android, a moderately sized error message appears and the device beeps, offering the user an option to file a crash report, on the other hand, when an app crashes in iOS, it leaves one wondering if they accidentally hit the home button, as it fails both silently and smoothly. For these reasons, for once this writer has decided to place more faith personally in the figures than in collective user claims as far as the debate goes.

It has been suggested that the reason for increased crash rates on iOS, despite Android devices featuring a much wider range of hardware, could be partly attributed to Apple’s hardened application approvals system, which makes the process of rolling-out crash fixes a much more lengthy one. Another suggestion is that unlike Java on Android, which runs in a virtual machine, Objective-C present on iOS has increased sensitivity to low-level interactions. That’s all well and good but, what do our readers think?

A1CS X220 Android Tablet Review

The A1CS X220 Android Tablet

A1CS X220 Android Tablet

A1CS X220 Android Tablet

The A1CS X220 Android Tablet is another low priced tablet PC. The iPad has been very successful, but is expensive and is out of range to most consumers.

There are some good low price alternatives such as the Tabtech M009S or the A1CS X220 which is an Android tablet made from China and rebranded to different names like the Flytouch 3 or Superpad 2.

The A1CS X220 is a 10-inch tablet which runs the Android 2.2 (Froyo) system supporting real Android market, WIFI and MIFI. The tablet is powered with 1 GHz Infotm X220 ARM11 processor and a 512 MB of RAM DDR2.

The A1CS X220 is the only 10.2″ tablet currently with built-in GPS support

User Reviews

Some users reviews found on Amazon are the following:

5.0 out of 5 stars Great buy at a great price,20 Jan 2011
This review is from: A1CS X220 TABLET 10.2″ ANDROID 2.2, WIFI, MIFI, HDMI, 1080P, GPS WITH CAM

The brought the tablet from A1CS on the Monday and it was delivered on the Wednesday morning. The tablet came with a free slip case and screen protector which was a nice surprise as these were not mentioned.

First of all this is not an I Pad, but at the third of the price, more connection options and software support it gives the I Pad real competition.

The tablet itself is easy to use with external controls mounted on the top of the tablet and the interface connections down the right hand side.

The 2x MicroSD sockets and the 2 x USB sockets means there is great scope for expansion and swapping of files between a PC and the tablet.

The screen is resistive compared to the capacitive of the I Pad meaning you need to touch it slightly harder to operate but after a few minutes of operation you soon forget this.

The only issue I have with the tablet is that it doesn’t work with my o2 3G dongle; this isn’t too much of an issue for me because I plan to use it mainly connected to the net via wifi but people buying this for use outside of the home and away from wifi hotspots should be aware of this.

I great buy at a good price.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Have Tablet PC,13 Feb 2011
This review is from: A1CS X220 TABLET 10.2″ ANDROID 2.2, WIFI, MIFI, HDMI, 1080P, GPS WITH CAM

Something must be really good for me to break my silence, and here it is.Forget all the hype you keep hearing about this tablet and that tablet, just buy this and enjoy,in the knowledge that it will do almost everything for a third of the price. After you have added this to your basket don`t forget to add the case which has a built in keyboard and stand,it`s the perfect way to protect your tablet.Research is what i do when buying an item, value for money etc and that`s exactly what this tablet gives you without scrimping on quality and features. It looks good,it feels good and performs extremely well.Easy to use and setup the internet, two minutes at the most, two micro sd slots, two standard USB ports and an ethernet port for network or a wired internet connection. The quality of the screen is excellent too and very responsive, there`s also a camera and microphone incorporated. The tablet has a 44 page manual which for the novice to the expert is easy to follow.Although i have said that it is packed with features, which it is,the one thing that stood out for me is the E-Book Reader only because i have alot of books and i was thinking of buying an E-Book Reader, but i`m not now.I loaded 35 of my books onto it for a start and i love it,i`ve just saved myself about hundred pounds as well by not buying an E-Book Reader. Now that`s what i call value for money.

 Conclusions

Overall, the A1CS X220 is really a good product for its price (you get what you pay for). According to the user reviews in Amazon, the tablet got a very high score.

Most users and reviewers signal the following positive points:

  • The screen is pretty responsive
  • 6 hours battery life (depending on usage)
  • Supports some 3G dongles
  • Android Market
  • Solid build
  • Rich in ports
  • Supports HD viewing
  • GPS Navigation (free external antenna)
